O Soajo

The Portuguese village of Soajo, in the county of Arcos de Valdevez, is located on a slope of the Peneda mountain range above the Lima river. Rising from the center of Soajo are 24 granite granaries, classified since 1983 as Buildings of Public Interest by IGESPAR.

Strategically located in elevated places, the granaries serve to dry and protect corn from storms and rodents.

The walls of the granaries have slits that allow the air to circulate between the stacked corn cobs and, on top, they bear a Christian cross that symbolizes the faith of the local community and invokes the divine protection of local crops.

The oldest granary dates to 1782.
